If you’re spending a lot of time doing crunches to get a flatter more toned stomach it may be time to change up your routine. Contrary to popular thought, crunches are NOT the best ab exercise if you’re looking for a sexier stomach this summer.
A recent study published in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research found that exercises, such as planks, that also recruit muscles like the glutes or shoulders increase activation of the abs. So this means you actually work your abs HARDER and since you’re recruiting extra muscles you’re actually getting more out of your workout.
So by incorporating planks into your workout routine you’re actually burning more calories and more fat while also doing a better job of toning that stomach!
Check out this recent segment on WTSP Studio 10 where I show you some different ways to do planks and more on WHY crunches are NOT the best ab exercise:
- Plank on the hands
- Plank Cross Ins
- Side Planks (add a pulse for more of a challenge)
- Side to Side Planks
- Reverse Planks (add a side to side hip wiggle to increase the intensity)
