When it came to getting a smart phone that actually supported apps, I was a late bloomer. It took me until a little over a year ago to finally purchase an Iphone. Mostly because my old phone broke and well I needed to replace it. I knew that it was going to make keeping up with things much easier and well just way more awesome, but I really had no idea how much it would effect my fitness (and yes all for the better).
So what I'm trying to say is that there are some amazing fitness apps out there designed to help keep you on track, motivate you, and actually make working out a little more fun. I'm sure there's thousands of fitness apps, but I'm going to stick with five of the best Iphone fitness apps that I personally use and enjoy! So here goes:
This app is a great way to track your meals, workouts, and progress! As I've mentioned in the past, keeping a food journal can be a huge part of successfully losing weight. This app makes it super easy. You can search foods or even scan barcodes to input food data and the app will calculate your calories and other nutrition facts for the day. In addition, you can log your exercise, track your progress, and even add friends so that you can see their progress and updates. Here's a quick screenshot from my phone in the afternoon yesterday:
2. Nike+ Running
Remember the days of running and having no clue exactly how far or how fast you ran? Well not anymore. I'm such a numbers person. Maybe that's why I was such a math nerd in high school. Yes, I took honors calculus as a senior and yes I know I'm a nerd, but trust me I'm ok with it. 😉 Anyhow, I pretty sure that's where my love of knowing the stats on my workouts. This app is great because it will track your distance, duration, pace, calories burned and even give you voice feedback while you are running, which by the way is great motivation to pick up your speed if you're slacking a bit. Additionally, it'll create a map of your run and you can even look at the map to see your pace during different parts of the run. This app will also track your personal records which is another motivator to keep you running!
Here's a screenshot of one of my most recent runs (hmm looks like I need to get back out there!)
3. Gymboss 2 Interval Timer
A great iphone alternative to the gymboss interval timer, is the gymboss 2 interval timer. It's also a handy if you've lost or forgotten your interval timer and need something in a pinch. This app does exactly the same thing by allowing you set up intervals that beep so you know when it's time to move on to the next exercise or when it's time to take a break. This newer version is much easier to use than the older version so make sure to download the second edition. As you now many of my fat burning workouts use an interval timer so this is a great thing to have to make timing your Get Foxy workouts much easier!
Ok, so I know this isn't specifically a fitness app, but if you're like me, music is a great motivator while exercising and not having music is not really an option during your workout. And all to often, I get behind on updating my Ipod playlist and get sick of the same old songs. That's where Pandora comes in. With Pandora you can find a radio station and let it mix up some songs for you! You can pick an artist or genre and Pandora will do all the work. And now Pandora even has workout specific stations. Some of my favorite playlists include:
- Pop and Hip Hop Power Workout
- Pop Fitness
- Electronic Cardio
- 80's Cardio
- Hard Rock Strength Training
- Classic Rock Power Workout
So maybe you're not a runner and didn't think the Nike+ App was all that cool. Maybe you're a biker, hiker, or swimmer and want to track your routes, duration, distance, or pace. Well then this app may be more up your alley as it will do all of the above in addition to tracking elevation changes, which is a great bonus for activities such as mountain biking, trail running, or hiking. Also, many of these apps, including this one and the Nike+ app allow you to share your stats on Facebook, so it's a great way to let others know about your progress.
